Northwest Probation Detention Center (NPDC)
Built in 1998 and located in Cedartown, Georgia, the Northwest Probation Detention Center (NPDC) was a minimum-security facility operated by the Georgia Department of Corrections. It housed male detainees for up to 180 days. Offenders could be sent directly to the center as a sentencing option or as a result of probation revocation proceedings if they failed to meet probation obligations in the community.
The facility was structured to accommodate up to 200 inmates, with four open dormitories containing 50 beds each, along with two solitary confinement cells. On-site amenities included a laundry, clinic, kitchen, Chapel and barber shop.
NPDC served as an alternative for probationers requiring more supervision and security than traditional probation but who were not eligible for placement in a work camp. The center operated with a highly regimented schedule, featuring supervised, unpaid community work and programs designed to improve offenders’ reintegration into society. Life skills courses were a central focus, including anger management programs and professional counseling.
In 2010, the Georgia Department of Corrections closed the NPDC as part of a cost-saving initiative, transferring its 158 inmates to other state facilities, primarily Walker State Prison in Rock Spring and Phillips State Prison in Buford. The center’s 59 employees were offered positions at other GDC facilities. The closure was estimated to save approximately $500,000 in direct operational costs, with the funds reinvested into other correctional facilities.
